New Zealand Geography Expedition – Queenstown

After a long scenic drive we arrived in a picturesque Queenstown, enjoying the sun and stunning scenery, overlooking Lake Wakatipu. We soon settled down in our new surroundings and began to get to know the area.

Steaks were on the menu, expertly cooked by head chefs Adam and Callum they were a group favourite, filling us up ready for a good nights sleep. The next day we ground out a ‘long’ day of studying, aided by Sue’s and Darren’s superior geographical knowledge, compensating for the lack of work done thus far. Later that day we were reprieved from our studies, visiting nearby Arrowtown, which proved an entertaining few hours, attempting the near impossible art of gold panning. The ‘loss’ of the pans didn’t help!

Today was keenly anticipated, with jet boating along the Dart river on the cards, and it was well worth the wait. Racing through Lord of the Rings country, travelling 40km past Isengard, we were just about able to take in the jaw dropping surroundings whilst experiencing full 360° spins. Taking pictures was tricky, avoiding a drenching every time we turned a corner, as Pickle soon found out.

Returning from the jet boating (which was much too short), we embarked on a short walk into a nearby forest, eating spicy leaves and learning about New Zealand’s ecology. A strange addition was squeezing the entire group into an ancient tree, some getting cosier than others . In all it was a top day out, the best so far.

Bring on the rest of the trip!

Callum and Chris
