Day 1 – Evening

After a busy day of travelling the group have now had a chance to fulfil their main concerns: food and relaxation.

Once we landed safely, we were met by our tour guide, Kate who took us to the incredible Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa. The water was approximately 40°C, heated by a geothermal power station. It was very relaxing and an usual experience with bitter winds above water whilst a very comfortable temperature below.

The Hotel is really like a Premier Inn. Classic Premier Inn food; which makes you feel quite bloated, but it is very nice. No McDonalds!!! There is KFC and Subway, which is across the road, so everything is good. We were watching the Real Madrid versus Borussia Dortmund. 3-0 Madrid. Wi-fi is expensive. How are we going to survive?!

Tomorrow, we will be heading out on the Golden Circle excursion where we will stop at Þingvellir (pronounced ‘Thingvellir’ translating roughly to ‘Parliament Plains’), a famous location for observing the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and landscapes covered with lava over 10,000 years of age. We will also be visiting Gullfoss Waterfall, known by many as the ‘Golden Waterfall’, along the Hvìtà river. Our third area of interest is just a few of the many Icelandic Geysers, with history dating back over 10,000 years to the end of the last ice age. Along the route we will also be visiting the Hellisheidi Power Station, harnessing Iceland’s readily available geothermal energy to create green and renewable energy.
